Aldingbourne is a village and parish 5 miles east from Chichester and 2 ¾ west from the Barnham station on the London, Brighton & South Coast railway, in the south-west division of the county, hundred of Box & Stockbridge, Chichester petty sessional division, rape & county court district, Westhampnett union, and in the rural deanery of Box grove (first division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St Mary is of stone in the Early English & Norman styles, and has a tower containing 3 bells; the chancel was restored and a south aisle was added to it in 1867, and in 1889 the church was restored at a cost of £1,669; there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net income £200, with residence and 50 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Walter William Kelly M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. At Lidsey and at Westergate are church mission rooms, and at Westergate a Wesleyan chapel and Salvation Army barracks. Aldingbourne was attached to the see of Chichester previous to the Conquest, and here the Bishops maintained a residence until 1642, when the palace was destroyed by the Parliamentary forces under Sir William Walter, Aldingbourne House, the property of Capt. K. Kincaid-Smith R.A., D.S.O. is a pleasantly situated mansion, and now the residence of Tom James esq. and Westergate House of Capt. William A. Grant. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Capt. Kenneth Kincaid-Smith and Joseph Godman esq. of Hascombe. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,003 acres of land & 5 of water; assessable value £6,807; the population in 1901 was 779
