About a mile from the Hastings and Brighton road, situated in a valley and surrounded by a moat, now dry, stand the magnificent ruins of Hurstmonceux castle, built in the reign of Henry VI, by Sir Roger de Fiennes; they are of brick, with stone window and door frames and hood-mouldings; the interior was pulled down about 1770; the outer walls and towers are yet standing and those at the gateway, when perfect, measured 84 feet in height; the south or grand front is 206 feet long, the east and west sides 214 feet long; the public are admitted to view the ruins. In Hurstmonceux Park, near the castle, Roman remains have been discovered. Lime Park is at present occupied by Baron von Roemer. The principal landowners are Herbert Curteis Esq. J.P. of Windmill Hill place, Worthing, who is lord of the manor; and Cecil Scott Arkcoll esq. The soil is loam and sand; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and hops.
