Sidlesham is a village and large parish, on the road to Chichester and 5 miles from that city in the south-western division of the county, hundred of Manhood, rape, and county court district of Chichester, union of Westhampnet, and in the rural deanery of Box grove (3rd division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St Mary is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 2 bells: the church was restored in 1890 at a cost of £500, and affords 320 sittings. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £111 , with 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Thomas Dutton M.A of St John’s College Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. A charity of £145 yearly, left by Dame Elizabeth Puckeringe, is applied to the support of 5 poor widows, each receiving a small sum weekly, and the residue for apprenticing fatherless children. The principal landowners are the Ecclesisastical Commissioners who are lords of the manor, the Pagham Harbour Reclamation Co. J. Godman Esq. of Hascombe, Godalming The soil is loam; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,954 acres of land, 6 of water, 8 of tidal water and 212 of foreshore; rateable value £5,261; the population in 1891 was 920
