Bosham is a village and parish, with a station at Broadbridge, called “Bosham” station, on the Horsham and Portsmouth section of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, 3 miles west of Chichester in the hundred of the same name, south-western division of the county, rape, petty sessional division and county court district, Chichester, union of Westbourne and in the rural deanery of Selsey and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. Two branches of the great estuary, Chichester Harbour & Bosham Creek, form the boundaries of the parish on the east, west and south. The church of the Holy Trinity, built on the site of a roman bascila, portions of which are still visible, is an edifice of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, and has a tower with spire containing 6 bells; there is a recumbent female effigy of the reign of Edward I; the tomb of Herbert de Bosham, secretary to St Thomas of Canterbury, and in the nave is the tomb of a young daughter of King Canute, whose remains eclosed in a stone coffin, were discovered in 1865 , and the spot has been marked by a stone slab given by the children of the parish in 1906; the church affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £253, with residence and 10 acres of glebe in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Kenneth Holland MacDermott L.Th of Durham University. Here is a congregational chapel, erected in 1837 with 100 sittings, and one at New Bosham, built in 1907, seating 100 persons. A house of Benedictine canons was founded here by St Wilfred in 681. The charitys amount to about £28 10s yearly. Here are extensive brick, tile and fancy pottery works, the property of the executors of the late Alfred Cheesman. The pumping station of the Chichester Corporation Waterworks is situated at Old Fishbourne. Old Park is the residence of Lord Gifford V.C. The Manor House now the property and residence of H. Selwyn Lloyd esq. was erected from the remains of a fortified structure said to have been the residence of King Harold. The principal landowners are Lord Gifford V.C. who is lord of the manor, the trustess of the late Alfred Cheesman, the Rev. W. A. St. John Dearsly M. A of Reach, Cambs, Mrs Heaver, Mrs Trevett, T. Weller-Poley esq. of West Broyle, the Misses Farndell and James Whitchurch esq. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,172 acres of land, 18 of water, 116 of tidal water and 609 of foreshore; rateable value £7,479; the population in 1901 was 1,149
