Egdean called in the Episcopal registers, “Bleatham” is a parish, on the road from Petworth to Arundel, 1 ½ miles north-west from Fittleworth station, on the Midhurst branch of the London, Brighton & South Coast railway, and 9 east from Midhurst, in the north-western division of the county, rape of Arundel, hundred of Rotheridge, Petworth petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Petworth and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St Bartholomew, built in 1623, is of brick and stone and has a western bellcote containing one bell; a vestry was added in 1898 at a cost of £70; there are 80 sittings. The register dates from the year 1646. The living is a rectory, net value £69, in the gift of Miss Cattley, and held since 1905 by the Rev. George Stewart Hyde Newbury M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, who is also rector of and resides at Fittleworth. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is light & dry; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley & turnips. The area is 739 acres; rateable value, £509; the population in 1901 was 59
