Westhampnett is a parish giving its name to a union, on the road from Chichester to Petworth, 1 ½ miles north-east from Chichester, 60 miles from London in the south-western division of the county, Box and Stockbridge hundred, Chichester rape, petty sesional division and county court district, rural deanery of Boxgrove (first division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St Peter is of stone, in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 3 bells; in the chancel there is a monument to Richard Sackville esq. and Elizabeth his wife, with kneeling effigies; the church was renovated in 1817, and completely restored in 1876; some portions of Roman materials worked up by the Saxon builder in the chancel arch and elsewhere still remain; the east and west windows are memorials; there are 215 sittings. In the churchyard are buried the Right Rev. A. T. Gilbert (d. 1870), the Right Rev. R. Durnford (d. 1895) and the Right Rev. E. R. Wilberforce (d. 1907), former Bishops of Chichester. The registers of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1734; marriages 1754. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £90, with residence and 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon G.C.V.C., C.B. and held since 1903 by the Rev. James Bartlett Dalby M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Duke of Richmond and Gordon G.C.V.C., C.B. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The fine stables attached to Goodwood House are in this parish. The soil is light loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is !,908 acres, chiefly arable land; assessable value £2,970; the population of the parish in 1901 was 364.

The Union House was a spacious mansion, of ancient date, formerly called Westhampnett Place, & was built by Sir Hutchins Williams bart. who made it his residence; the back part of the house was Elizabethan & was probably built by Richard Sackville (uncle of Thomas, first Lord Buckhurst); it was afterwards sold by Sir W. Peere Williams to Charles, third Duke of Richmond, who converted it to its late purpose; this interesting building was unfortunately destroyed by fire on the night of November 3 & 4, 1899.
