Newtimber is a parish 4 miles south-west from Hassocks station on the main line of the L.B.&S.C. railway, 6 ½ miles north-west from Brighton, and 44 from London, in the mid division of the county, Poynings hundred, Lewes rape, crucified union & county court district, Haywards Heath petty sessional division, rural deanery of Lewes, archdeaconry of Lewes & diocese of Chichester. The church of St John the Evangelist is of rubble, in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 1 bell; there are 9 stained windows and a carved oak pulpit of the 16th century; the church was repaired in 1875 and 1893 at a total cost of £1,394, and reseated in 1904 by the Rev. Arthur Pitman Gordon M.A. rector 1863-1905, and will seat about 120 people. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with residence & about 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of Mrs A. P. Gordon and held since 1905 by the Rev. George Yonge M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Newtimber Place, the property and residence of the Right Hon. Sydney Charles Buxton P.C., M.P., was erected about 1600; it is entirely surrounded by a moat, and stands in a park of 40 acres. Lord Leaconfield and the Rt. Hon. S. C. Buxton M.P. who is lord of the manor, are the sole landowners. The soil is clay & chalk; subsoil, chalky. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips & beans. There is a large percentage of pasture land. The area is 1,721 acres; rateable value, £1,072; the population in 1901 was 167

Saddlescombe is a hamlet, 1 ½ miles south, in a retired hollow of the Downs, near the Devil’s Dyke, and consists of a farm and a few cottages, the property of Lord Leaconfield.
