BOGNOR is a market town and chapelry, in the parish of South Berstead, hundred of Aldwicke and rape of Chichester, 68 miles s. w. by s. from London, 29 w. from Brighton, and 7 from Chichester. It is pleasantly situated near the peninsula of Selsey, on the shore of the English channel, extending from Portsdown to Dover; sheltered from the north winds by a chain of hills called the South Downs. Prior to the year 1790 it was but a small village, inhabited only by a few labourers and fishermen; but, from the salubrity of the air, the eligibility of the beach for bathing, and its extensive and romantic views, it has become a place of fashionable summer resort, and is increasing in popularity. For the accommodation of visiters there are lodging houses, warm and cold baths, libraries and hotels; amongst the latter, the Norfolk Hotel is an elegant and admirably conducted establishment. There is no other trade than what is requisite for the supply of the visiters and inhabitants; of the latter, several are employed in the fishery. The internal regulation of the town is under the superintendence of commissioners, appointed in accordance with the provisions of a local act, which empowers them to levy a duty on coal, culm and coke, which is applied in repairing the roads.
The places of worship are St. John’s chapel of ease, erected and endowed by subscription in 1821, and chapels for independents and Wesleyan methodists. The principal charitable institutions are the ‘Jubilee school,’ founded by the late Princess Charlotte, for fifty girls; and a school for clothing and educating twenty girls, founded by Mrs. Smith. Beautiful agates and pebbles are found in abundance on the beach; and in the rocks various fossils have been discovered. The markets, established within these few years by act of parliament, and for which a spacious market place has been formed, are on Thursday and Saturday; and a fair is held on the 5th and 6th July. The population of the chapelry of Bognor is returned with that of the parish of South Berstead, which amounted, by the returns for 1831, 20 2,190 inhabitants.
One mile east of Bognor, in the hundred of Avesford, is the village and parish of FELPHAM, situated on the same line of shore as Bognor, and the lands of the parish are occasionally subject to inundations from the sea. The village contains a small parish church, dedicated to St. Mary; the benefice is a discharged vicarage, in the gift of the dean of Chichester. The parish contained, in 1831, 588 inhabitants.
