Post Office Directory 1851, Bosham, West Sussex


Bosham is a village and parish. 4 miles west of Chichester, in hundred of same name, rape of Chichester. Two branches of the great estuary, Chichester harbour and Bosham creek, form the boundaries of the parish, east ,west and south, and Funtington on the north; its area is 3,860 acres; population, in 1841, was 1,091. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Chichester and deanery of Boxgrove, patronage of the Dean & Chapter of Chichester, and incumbency of the Rev. Henry Mitchell, M.A., value £280 per annum. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the fishery. The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is partly in the early style of English architecture, and partly in that which prevailed in the 14th century; the prebendal stalls still remain in the chancel, and in the north wall is a niche, with crocketted ornaments, enclosing a female incumbent figure, of a style not earlier than the reign of Edward I. The principal landowners are the Hon. Captain Berkeley, Col. Webber Smith, Messes. Cheesman, Farndell, Boorn, and others. The Income Tax assessment, in 1845, was £8,100. Broadbridge, Creed, Old Fishbourne, Gosport and Walton are tithing belonging to this parish. The South Coast Railway passes through the northern portion of the parish, and has a station at Broadbridge, called the Bosham Station.
