Chiltington, or West Chiltington is a parish, in West and East Easewrith hundreds, rapes of Arundel and Bramber, Thakeham union, 9 miles east from Petworth; its area is 8,690 acres; the population, in 1851, was 800. The benefice is a rectory, value £550 per annum, in the gift of the Earl of Abergavenny, and incumbency of the Rev. R. J. Cooper, M.A. Here is a free school, endowed, in 1635, by William Smith, of Angmering.
