Crawley is a parish 1 mile from Three Bridges station, on the Brighton Railway, 29 miles from London, and 9 ½ north of Cuckfield, in Buttinghill hundred, East Grinstead union, and rape of Lewes, with 820 acres, and a population of 447, assessed at £618. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is an ancient stone structure, with square tower; living is a rectory, value £118 per annum, in the patronage of Gen. Clithero. The Rev. Charles Fowler is the incumbent. There are fairs for horses and cattle on the 8th of May and 29th September. About 1 mile north stood the county oak, at the Surrey boundary, on Lowfield heath. Tilgate House is to the south of Crawley, as is Tilgate Forest Lodge, the seat of Sir E. B. Sugden, the late Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Broadfield Lodge and Place are in St. Leonard’s Forest. There is a free school for 80 boys. Here are places of worship for Calvinists. Gen. Clithero is lord of the manor.
