West Grinstead is a very extensive parish, 6 ¾ miles south from Horsham, 8 ½ north of Steyning, and 43 from London, on the road to Worthing, and river Adur (which is navigable for small vessels), in the rape of Bramber, hundred of the same name, Horsham union. Its area is 6,680 acres, assessed to the Income Tax at £6,088. The benefice is a rectory in the patronage of Col. Wyndham, and incumbency of the Rev. T. W. Langshaw, B.A.; the tithe have been counted at £1,060 per annum. The church is an ancient fabric; it contains monuments to the Powlett, Burrell and Caryll families, and a few fine old brasses. Here is a Roman Catholic chapel, of which the Rev. Joseph Sidden is priest. West Grinstead Park is in this parish, and is well stocked with deer. The principal owners of the soil are Sir C. M.
