Jevington is an old village nestling in a quiet valley in the South Downs not far from Eastbourne.

The village was originally called Govingtona or Gefingatun, probably named after a person called Ge(o)fa (a shortened version of the common Saxon name Gefmund).

The church dates from about 900 AD and has a defensive tower similar to the one at East Dean. The tower was the refuge from the Vikings when they came raiding the area, probably trying to kill the population that supplied King Alfred the Great's port at nearby Exceat.

The village was also the site for a monastery, founded certainly before 1344 (there is a recorded court case of three men being charged by the Prior of Michelham for breaking into the Chapelry and stealing timber). In 1238 William de Montague granted 'The Chapelry to Michelham Priory', which suggests a 12th century date for its foundation. The monastery, which was very small (probably just one or two monks) was dedicated to St Lewinna. Its time probably came to an end when Wilmington Priory closed in 1414/15.
