This page contains links to sites likely to be of interest to researchers and genealogists - please contact us if you feel there are sites we could usefully add to this list or any of the links don’t work properly.

  • FreeCens - Free access to transcriptions of the UK census returns.
  • FreeReg - Free access to transcriptions of baptism, marriage and burials registers.
  • FreeBMD - Free access to transcriptions of the Births, Marriages and Deaths registrations index.
  • Explore England’s Past - provides free access to 1000s of local history resources including images, transcribed wills and documents and town trials.
  • Robert Eberhard Stained Glass Windows - has information about the stained glass in Sussex Churches. The direct links to individual churches from the church pages have been removed as the site does not gaurantee URL stability.
  • Victoria County History - Founded in 1899 and originally dedicated to Queen Victoria, this extraordinary and authoritative project is a work in progress by historians working in counties across England.  It is based at the Institute of Historical Research in the University of London.  The VCH is an encyclopedic record of England’s places and people from earliest times to the present day.

  • GENUKI (Sussex) - a large resource of online information for genealogical researchers.
  • Family Roots - The Family History Society for Eastbourne and surrounding District.
  • Hastings and Rother Family History Society - The Family History Society for Rother and Hastings District.
  • Markets and Fairs to 1516 - the Sussex index.
  • RootsChat - Sussex Pages.
  • Sussex Electoral Poll of 1734 - Transcription of a poll taken by Henry Montague Esq (Sheriff of the county of Sussex at the city of Chichester) in May 1734. The generosity of the transcriber means that this poll is now indexed in the Sussex OPC database of poll register entries.
  • Sussex Family History Group - the site contains much of interest to the family historian.
  • Sussex Parish Churches - a scholarly and authoritative study of the development of Anglican parish churches in Sussex. There are over 400 entries describing each Anglican church.
  • Sussex PhotoHistory - devoted to photographers active in Sussex during Victorian and Edwardian times - useful help in dating those old photos!
  • SussexPostcards.Info - Here you will find information about many of the people in Sussex who published postcards between 1900 and 1980, and also examples of the types of cards they produced. National publishers are not covered because most are already well described in books and articles.
  • The Weald - a site containing a wealth of register and census transcriptions for parishes in the Weald (Kent, Sussex, Surrey).
  • Tunbridge Wells Family History Society - A society for people with family connections to Tunbridge Wells and the (Kent & Sussex) parishes surrounding that town.
  • West Sussex Record Office - contains a wealth of information at the information held in this county record office.
  • Ye Olde Sussex Pages - a diverse site about all things Sussex.
  • West Sussex Past - the portal to archive, library and museum online heritage services.

General resources

  • The National Archives - official government website, formerly the Public Records Office (PRO).
  • International Genealogical Index - The free resource provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
  • Access to Archives - The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.
  • Roll of Honour - a site containing a mass of information about people who have died in conflict (contains much Sussex information).
  • The Domesday Book Online - Commissioned in 1085 by William the Conqueror.
