In the late 1960's St Edmund's Church was superseded by a new Church of the Ascension built, together with a fine church hall and a house for the priest, in the heart of the modern development in Vale Road and Sheppeys area of the town. The first priest in charge was the Rev. A. G. Collin and the first confirmation in the church was conducted by the Bishop of Horsham in January, 1970.
