Built about 1379, this barnlike building was a part of Rye's Augustine Friary. During the 16th century, it provided a refuge for 1,500 Huguenot refugees, many of whose descendants still live in Rye. In more recent times, the building served as a dance hall, a theatre and a Salvation Army barracks. In more recent times it has housed a pottery and is now being considered as a possible location for a public library (2007).
