Will of James Langridge of Fletching

This is the last Will and Testament of me James Langridge of Fletching in the County of Sussex yeoman made the 16th day of May in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six as follows (that is to say) Imprimis I will order and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be fully paid and satisfied by my Executors hereinafter named Item I give and devise unto my son James Langridge of Newick in the said County wheelwright All that my Messuage or Tenement wherein I now dwell with the Buildings land and appurtenances to the same belonging situate lying and being in the Parish of Fletching aforesaid commonly called or known by the name of Christopher’s Field To hold unto my said son James Langridge his heirs and assigns for ever Also I give and devise unto my son William Langridge All that my customary cottage and small piece of land and premises situate lying and being at Dane Hill in the Parish of Horsted Keynes and now in the occupation of myself To Hold unto my said son William Langridge his heirs and assigns for ever Also I give and bequeath to my said son William Langridge the sum of one hundred Pounds of lawful money as current in Great Britain to be [aid him by my said Executors when and so soon as my youngest child shall attain the age of twenty one years And as to all the residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects whatsoever and of what nature or kind soever which I may die possessed of interested in or entitled unto after payment and satisfaction of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses and the before-mentioned legacy I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my brother in law Richard Bax of Chailey in the said county yeoman and Peter Wells of Hurstpierpoint in the same county shopkeeper In trust that they the said Richard Bax and Peter Wells or the survivor of them or the executors or administrators of such survivor do and shall sell and convert such part and parts thereof as shall not consist of monies into money and place the same out at interest on Government or other good and sufficient security or securities and pay and apply the Dividends interest and proceeds thereof for and towards the support maintenance and education of my said children until my youngest daughter Hannah Langridge shall attain her age of twenty one years and from and after she shall have attained that age or in case of her death under the said age of twenty one years and the others of my said children shall severally have attained that age in trust to divide the same between and among my three daughters Elizabeth the wife of William Browning Mary the wife of William Holford and Hannah Langridge share and share alike which I do hereby give and bequeath to them accordingly And in case any or either of my said daughters shall happen to depart this life under the said age of twenty one years without leaving issue of her or their body or bodies lawfully begotten the part or share or parts or shares of her or them so dying shall fall (James Langridge) to and be divided amongst the survivors or survivor of them share and share alike Provided always and it is my Will and mind that the said Richard Bax and Peter Wells their executors and administrators shall be charged and chargeable only for such monies as he or they shall respectively actually receive by virtue of the trusts hereby in them reposed nor shall he or they or either of them be answerable or accountable for any Banker Broker or other person with whom or in whose custody or otherwise in the execution of any of the Trusts hereinbefore mentioned nor shall they or either of them be at any time answerable or accountable for the insufficiency or deficiency or any security or securities stocks or funds in or upon which the said trust monies or any part thereof shall be placed out or invested nor for any other loss which may happen to the aforesaid trust premises except the same shall happen by or through their own wilful default respectively And that one of them shall not be answerable or accountable for the other of them or for the Acts defaults receipts or disbursements of the other of them but each of them for the acts deeds defaults and disbursements of himself only And also that they the said Richard Bax and Peter Wells their executors and administrators shall and may by and out of the monies which shall or may come to their or his hands by virtue of the trusts aforesaid retain to or reimburse themselves and himself respectively all costs charges damages and expenses which they or either of them shall or may suffer sustain expend disburse of be put unto in or about the execution of the trusts hereby in them reposed or in relation thereto And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Richard Bax and Peter Wells joint executors in Trust of this my Will hereby revoking and making void all former and other Wills by me at any time heretofore made and I declare this only to be and contain my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I the said James Langridge the testator have to this my last Will and Testament contained in two sheets of paper set my hand and seal the Top of the first sheet where the same are affixed together my Hand to the bottom thereof and my hand and seal to this last sheet the day and year first before written James Langridge [LS] Signed sealed published and declared by the said James Langridge the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto set our names as witnesses John Wood – Amos Tulley – Peter Penfold

Sepr the 12 1806 I further give and bequeath to the Particular Baptist Church assembling at Forest Row under the Pastoral care of Joseph Terry and James Langride [sic] The sole use of that little building which I have built for the public worship of God standing in my garden in the front of my house situate at Dane Hill in the Parish of Fletching joining the Turnpike road to have and to hold for the Public Preaching the Gospel so long as there shall be a Particular Baptist Church at Forest Row maintaining three equal persons in the Godhead Eternal and personal election to holiness here and eternal life hereafter not according to our works but according to his own purpose of Grace and likewise the original guilt and depravity of mankind Also particular redemption by the Blood of Christ so also free justification by the imputed righteousness of Christ alone likewise efficacious Grace in regeneration In fine the perseverance of the Saints to eternal Glory to the End likewise maintain the Orderance of Water Baptism by dipping. It is my Will and pleasure that they shall have the liberty to enlarge the above building 10 or 12 feet to the westward if required at the Church Expense and the Church to keep the aforesaid building in repair during the time there shall be a Church at Forest Tow paying yearly the sum of five shillings to my heirs or assigns James Langridge [LS] Signed sealed and published and declared by the said James Langridge the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses James Terry – Henry Uridge – Daniel Jackson – Willm Holford

This Will and Codicil of James Langridge late of Fletching within the Archdeaconry of Lewes Yeoman deceased were proved the thirteenth day of November in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six Before the Reverend James Hutchins Clerk Surrogate and so forth Upon the Oaths of Richard Bax and Peter Wells the joint executors in the said Will named To whom was committed the Administration of the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased they being first sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and so forth (Sworn also that the goods chattels and credits & do not amount in value unto two thousand pounds)
