John Croucher, the founder of the Congregationalists in Billingshurst, acquired a former officers' mess building from the Napoleonic Wars era and re-erected it as a chapel in 1815. The octagonal structure was used until 1868, when a new church (now Trinity United Reformed Church) was built elsewhere in the village.
