WESLEY DAY AT DALLINGTON/ ANNIVERSARY SERVICES
The 200th anniversary of John WESLEY's 'Life Changing Experience' was celebrated at the Dallington Methodist Chapel on Sunday and was conducted by Mr. Arthur BROOKER, and Mr. J.S. BEECHING, of St Leonards. The Rector, the Rev. P. KINGSFORD, also attended and spoke in prayer. The Lesson was read by Mr. Harry SAUNDERS, and the children sang one of Charles WESLEY's hymns, "Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild' and some little girls sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus'; and Mrs LULHAM sang a solo, 'Hear and Bless'.
Philip LULHAM read a bi-centenary statement from The Life of John WESLEY, and different parts of the service prepared for the day were also read by Alec BAKER, George COLLYER, and Donald PANKHURST.
Nearly fifty persons, parents, children and friends, attended the service, which concluded with all singing the Dismissal, 'Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing'. Mrs N. BOOTH was at the organ.
CHAPEL HISTORY
The Chapel was built in 1870. Before that services were held in the Glovers Cottage just below it. So many used to attend that they had to sit on the stairs, and at last the owner of the cottage, a Mr. GOSLING, gave a piece of ground for the Chapel to be built upon. Good work has been done in this place of worship. The well-known missionary, the Rev Hilderic FRIEND, was a native of Dallington. He attended the chapel as a boy and assisted in the work there as a young man, before going to China as a missionary. He has since revisited Dallington and given a lantern lecture on missionary work in China.
For over fifty years the work of the chapel was carried on by Mr. Isaiah PANKHURST. It is in the St Leonards Circuit, and preachers from St Leonards and Bexhill frequently assist in the services.
