SS. SIMON AND JUDE. Alfred the Great is said to have held his court in this village in 884. The church is of the usual Sussex type - E.E. with Perp. insertions. The tower, in three stages (Nor.), is the oldest part of the building, and some bricked-up doors and windows are of the same period; chancel and windows late 12th c. The font has some of the old Nor. work inserted in it, resembling those at Denton and S Anne's, Lewes; the pedestal of the ancient font was used as a horse block at the Tiger Inn. Note: restored oak pulpit, 1624; stoup with trefoiled niche (Dec.); old beams of roof.
