With, reference to the announcement of the undermentioned awards which appeared in the London Gazette of the 12th March, 1919, the following are the acts of gallantry for which the awards were made: AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. 40148 Sjt. F. J. Hillman, 61st Fd. Coy. , R. E. (Brighton). He displayed great coolness and courage on two occasions when bridging the Scheldt. On the 29th October, 1918, at Espierres he, with his officer, succeeded in throwing a bridge across the river in face of heavy machine-gun and trench-mortar fire. Again, on the 4th November, north of Helchin, he performed a similar act. On this occasion the bridge was thirty yards from an enemy post; from which heavy fire was opened. Throughout the operation he was at the bridgehead assisting the launching, and a successful minor operation was carried out. He set an excellent example to the bridging platoon.
