Barcombe is a village split into three, with the old village centre by the church being abandoned during the Black Death in the middle of the 14th century, with the population moving to Barcombe Cross. The area of Barcombe Mills which is by the river Ouse has always been important for milling.

There was formerly a railway station at Barcombe, on the East Grinstead to Lewes line, following closure the railway track is now overgrown and disused.

The village has a delightful tin hall- one of a dying breed, formerly a mission church.

The centre of population is now Barcombe Cross, where there is a church dedicated to St Francis of Assisi.
