With reference to the announcement of the undermentioned awards which appeared in the London Gazette of the 1st January, 1919, the following are the acts of gallantry for which the awards were made : DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL. 68421 Gnr. F. Gardner, 299th Sge. By. , R. G. A. , attd. 16th Ord. Mob. Workshop (Horsham). For marked courage and consistent devotion to duty. He was always a willing and capable volunteer when, special work had to be performed: and showed great gallantry when it was necessary to help the wounded in the battery under shell fire and carry them to safety. On 24th August, 1918, at Miraumont, while out on a reconnaissance and temporarily detached from the rest of his party, he captured an enemy sniper who had been harassing the main road and brought him into the battery.
