Will of Thankful Bishop of Northiam

In the name of God Amen the three and twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred fifty and three I Thankefull Byshopp of Northyham in the county of Sussex being weak in body but of good and perfect memory for which I give humble and hearty thanks unto Almighty God do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say First and principally I commend my soul into the hand of Almighty God my maker and creator who at the first gave it me in full assurance through the death and suffering of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ to be raised into everlasting life and to have an inheritance with the Saints in glory and my body to the earth from whence it came to be interred at the discretion of my executrix hereafter named after decent manner in Christian burial Item I give and bequeath unto the poor people of the parish of Northiham aforesaid thirty shillings to be distributed at the discretion of my executrix within one year after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of Battell ten shillings to be likewise distributed by my executrix within one year after my decease Item I give and bequeath to Elizabeth my beloved wife the lease of the house and orchard where I now live with all profit thereunto belonging unto my daughter Anne and to have and enjoy the same for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease then I give the lease of the said house orchard and profits thereunto belonging to her heirs for ever Item my will is that Elizabeth my said wife shall have the use of all my household for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease then my will is that the said household shall be equally divided amongst my three children William Thankefull and Ann (excepting such household as hath been formerly given to either of them by the aforesaid Elizabeth my wife) Item All the rest of my movables money and goods not bequeathed I give unto Elizabeth my wife whom I do make and appoint sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I Thankefull Byshopp to this my last Will and Testament have put my hand and seal the day and year first above written Thankefull Byshopp Read published and declared by the said Thankefull Byshopp as his last Will and Testament in the presence of George Byshopp Edw: Glover

This Will was proved at Westminster the seven and twentieth day of September in the year of our lord 1653 before the judges for probate of Wills and granting Administrations according to an Act of Parliament entitled an Act for probate of Wills and granting Administrations by the oath of Elizabeth Byshopp the relict and executrix named in the said will to whom administration was committed of all and singular the good chattels and debts of the said deceased she being first sworn by virtue of a special commission well and truly to administer the same
