Harrison's description (1911):

ST. MARY. The mixed styles of E.E., Dec. and Perp. are to be seen in this church, which stands partly inside a Roman earthwork. The chancel is E.E. and has a Dec. low-side window. There is some old stained glass. In the tower (Perp.) is an ironbound chest, and a strong oak door with curious ironwork called "Richard Woodman's Door," which is supposed to be the work of an ironfounder of that name, who suffered martyrdom with others at Lewes in 1557. The tower loft was used as a place of refuge during the Marian persecution. There is a splendid brass to Dean Prestwick, Prior of Battle, 1436; a monument to Sir T. Lade, 1740, in N. aisle; an elaborate tomb to John Lade, M.P., in the chantry; brass to John Prestwick. Note: Squire's pew (1722); and a rounded arch outside S. wall of chancel. Font, early 15th c.
