Notes about this will:

This will was generously transcribed for Jacqui Hart who has contributed it to the OPC scheme. Prob 11/35.

By ‘Chapellry of Bokefeld’ is probably meant the Chapelry of Uckfield which came under the auspices of the parish of Buxted.

Two words in the inventory of household stuff I didn’t know:

(1) ?Kelders – Perhaps kilderkins which were casks or barrels for fish or liquids such as ale or beer. Or it could be keelers which are shallow tubs used in a brewhouse or around the house.

(2) Looks like ?coovylls - I don’t know what this might be but perhaps some sort of barrel or similar container, as he mentions barrels before this.

Regarding the word ‘equally’. They did sometimes at that time write q the way we write g, so it looks to us as if he wrote ‘egally’ but it is a q not a g.

They would usually call them pillow biers then but the second word is not biers but looks like cases or covers. I am unsure whether they called them pillowcases this early. The earliest reference I have to pillowcase is 1633.

A mark is I think 13 shillings 4 pence.

Caffas is a coarse taffeta fabric.

Priests were then addressed as Sir. This didn’t mean they were titled just similar to our address of the Reverend.

How interesting to see Ralph Hogg and Parson Levett mentioned. They cast the first iron cannon in England in Buxted in 1543.

Framfield, Buxted, Maresfield, Uckfield, Isfield.
