ST. MARY MAGDALENE. Restored in 1864 and 1883. The original church was Saxon, and of this there may be traces in nave and chancel arch. It was a nun's chapel of the time of Athelstan. The lower part of tower is 12th c. (Tr-Nor.); upper part, Perp. The pillars (Tr.-Nor.); have scalloped or foliated capitals; and the chancel arch has double impost. Note: fine piscina (13th c.) in N. aisle; font (late Nor.); piscina in chance; built-up priests' door; Sussex marble coffin lid; old chest (16th c.); sexfoil window in S. nave; fine oak roof; N. porch (early 15th c.) with old barge-board; W. door (Nor.); oak supports to belfry; on S. exterior, two built-up doors. The nave has been raised some 5 feet.
