Notes about this will:

NATHANIEL ADAMS OTHERWISE HUMPHREY – the Testator. Nathaniel was baptised in West Chiltington on16 October 1670, son of John Adams. As the youngest son of his father, he inherited John’s Copyhold property in West Chiltington, called Lintotts. As he was only 10-11 when his father died, his elder brother, John, looked after him, as his property. When that John died in 1684, Henry Harwood, a neighbor of the family at Lintotts, seems to have become guardian of him and his property. For most of Nathaniel’s life Lintotts seems to have been rented out to others, and Nathaniel apparently lived, at least for a time, in the centre of the village, possibly in the property called Sparrows, where he worked as a tailor. Nathaniel never seems to have married or to have had children. In 1725 he was imprisoned in Horsham, for debt, and remained there until the end of March 1726. He was back in prison again, in 1729, for debt. He was buried in West Chiltington on 16 June 1740, at the age of 69.

JOHN, SAMUEL, THOMAS, JANE & HANNAH ADAMS ALIAS HUMPHREY were all the children of Nathaniel’s brother Samuel, who had died in 1723.
