In the name of god Amen I ROBERT CARR of CHILTINGTON in the County of Sussex Clerke beinge weake of body but of good & p[er]fect mind & memory thanks bee given to almighty God for the same hereby revokeinge all other & former Wills either made or spoken doe make & ordaine this p[re]sent writtinge to bee & containe my true last Will & Testam[en]t in mann[er] & forme followinge that is to say Imprimis I bequeath my Soul into the hands of almighty God my heavenly Father assuredly trustinge to bee saved in the day of ye gen[er]all res..orection [resurrection] by the alone merirtts & passion of my Lord & Savio[ur] Jesus Christ & my body I com[m]itt to the earth to be decently buryed in Christian buryall where it shall please God to call mee and as for the worldly estate that God of his mercy hath blessed mee with I dispose as followeth

It[e]m I doe nominate and appoint HANNAH my loving wife sole Ex[ecu]trix of this my last will & Testam[en]t and I doe give to her all my p[er]sonall estate whatsoev[er] except what small p[ar]t thereof I shall hereafter bequeath and intend otherwise to dispose in the p[re]sent writtinge

It[em] I give to GRACE CANTO[?] my daughter by my first wife who is otherwise well p[ro]vided for only twenty shill[ing]s to bee p[ai]d within three months after my decease of goods & lawfull money & two Childbed Suits of Linnen w[hi]ch were her Mothers a red blanket w[i]th a fair silver Lace two pair of sheets one of the finest sort a Table Cloth dozen of napkins & Cupboard Cloath of Dyaper w[hi]ch was her mothers the bed rag blanketts and bolster & pillow bear w[hi]ch for many years past have layen upon all w[hi]ch it is my ill should bee deliv[er]ed to her within three months after my decease

It[e]m my mind & will is my freehold copyhold Lands & Tenem[ent]s & hereditam[en]ts whatsoev[er]& wheresoev[er] the same ly in CHILTINGTON or else where which I have either in possession or reversion to bee sold by my faithfull & appointed good friends my loveinge brother in Law SAMUELL BEDFORD of HENLOW in the County of BEDFORDSH[IRE] and my good friend Mr EDMUND COLES Recto[r] of STORRINGTON in SUSSEX Mr RICHARD RIDDER Clerk Minister of ST MARTINS OUTWITCH in BISHOPS GATE STREET LONDON Mr JOHN MARRYON Sen[ior] of BRAINTREE in ESSEX Clothier Mr JOHN BUTLER Scriven[er] of LONDON in FENCHURCH STREET my neer Kinsman or the major part of them or by the surviv[or] or surviv[or]s of them att such time and in such manner for the benefit & advantage of my Children as they in their …[?[ shall think fitt and the money … …[?] of the sle of them to bee by them my said friends equally parted and divided to & amongst my Children I have by HANNAH my now Wife vizt ALAN ROBERT THOMAS EDWARD BEDFORD CHARLES ISAAC HANNAH MERCY to bee employed by them my said friends for the putting out & raiseinge porc[i]ons for my said Children my sons to such employme[n]t my daughters in such manner as to them or the major p[ar]t of them or ye Surviv[or]s or Surviv[or] of them together w[i]th my s[ai]d Wife shall seeme most fitt & convenient & what shall remaine of their sev[er]all shares after their Charge of puttinge out first paid I will shall be paid to my said sons and daughters att their sev[er]all & respective ages of one & twenty years.

It[e]m Igive unto my eldest son ALAN ye Criticall Annotac[i]ons in nine volumes folio w[hic]h cost me Sixteen pounds and to my son ROBERT my Hebrew bible in four volumes of Plattans printing my Junius & Tremellius upon the whole bible and twelve of my best books in my study as hee shall think fitt to chuse and my minde & my will is that all ye rest of my Library books printed & manuscript my wife HAN[N]AH haveinge taken out for her use such practicall books as shee shall chuse not exceedinge twelve in number shalbee equally divided betwixt my two sons ALAN & ROBERT bred up scholars

It[e]m my Will is that if any of my Children afore named w[hi]ch are borne to mee by my Wife HANNAH shall happen to dy before the age of one & twenty yeares then I will that the share of p[ar]tof my estate before bequeathed unto him or them soe dying shall bee divided amongst the survivors of them

It[e]m I give unto my two daughters by my p[res]ent wife HANNAH & MERCY halfe my household goods & linen to be equally divided between them reserveinge ye use & ware of them for her occations to their mother dureinge her life unlesse shee can spare them sooner for them when they are disposed in the world & have occations for such necessaries

It[e]m I give to ye poor of CHILTINGTON two pounds & ten shill[ing]s to bee distributed as my Ex[ecu]trix shall order w[i]thin two months after my decease

It[e]m I ordaine & appoint yt my loveinge wife whom I make sole Ex[ecu]trix of this my last Will shall pay my debts oweinge att ye time of my death out of ye money w[hi]ch will arise due from SAMUELL LEVER of THAKEHAM for timber & wood to him lately sold & out of my Corne growing upon my Glebe or housed in the barne & ye surplusage of all my other moneys arrears or Rent or debts howsoev[er] owinge to mee w[i]th all moneys goods & Chattells moveables w[hi]ch I dy seized of I bequeath to her willinge her to pay JOHN HERD of BRAINTREE son the ov[er]plus w[hic]h I have received above the money I layd downe upon the mortgage the amount whereof is in a black box by it selfe in my study to his Son to whom it is due justly & truly when hee shall come of age to receive itt & if my Wife after my death shall bee straightened for money to support her occasions my minde & will is that my above named trustees & friends doe fell & sell of such woods and timber as may bee spared of my freehold Land in CHILTINGTON to supply her needs & answer her occasions for puttinge out any of my younger Children App[re]ntices or educatinge them in such mann[er] as may seem best to her w[i]th the advise & consent of my friends abovenamed. Or if there bee not timber or wood to be felled wh[i]thout wast & spoyle made of younge woods not fitt to cutt downe to borrow upon Mortgage upon any p[ar]t of my Estate such money as shall answer those her occasions until they can sell the whole estate & pay itt in againe

It[e]m it is my mind & will if after my Mother Mrs MARY CARRs death it seems best to my Wife her friends that shee chuse that Coppyhold w[hic]h I am estated in after my Mothers death for her livelihood because of ye convenient house & dwellinge upon itt that my wife HANNAH shall bee fined in it for her life only afterwards my trustees & friends abovenamed to dispose of it to ye uses afore appointed P[ro]vided shee first relinquish her Estate for her Life in my freehold Land

It[e]m I give to my dear Mother Mrs MARY CARR & Sister Mrs ELIZABETH WESTON ten shill[ing]s a piece for a Ring & ye same to my loveinge friends a forenamed my trustees for my Wife & Children to bee paid w[i]thin three months after my decease

Archdeaconry Court of Chichester

ROBER CARR – the Testator. He was baptised in Lingfield, Surrey on 27 June 1626. He was a son of Alan Carr and Mary Butler. Like his father he attended Cambridge University. He became Chaplain to the Earl of Warwick. He was also Rector of Braintree in Essex from 1662 – 1676, and succeeded his father as Rector of West Chiltington in 1668, remaining there until his death in 1675. He had obtained a dispensation to hold the both Braintree and West Chiltington at the same time. Robert married twice, although his first wife’s name is not known. His second wife was Hannah Bedford. He was buried in West Chiltington on 23 November 1675. Hannah was buried in West Chiltington 31 March 1682.

HANNAH CARR - Wife of the Testator. Hannah was probably born Hannah Bedford [in his Will Robert refers to his brother in law Samuel Bedford of Henlow, in Bedfordshire. She was buried in West Chiltington on 31 March 1682.

ALAN CARR – Son of the Testator. He also went to Cambridge University, like his father & grandfather. He was Vicar of Glynde, Sussex from 1681 – 1720, and died in 1720.

ROBERT CARR – Son of the Testator. He was probably the Robert Carr who went to Cambridge University in 1673, and later became Vicar of Sutton and Seaford in Sussex.
