Will of Henry Harwood of West Grinstead

In the name of God Amen the Twelfth Day of April One Thousand Seven Hundred & Fourteen I HENRY HARWOOD of WEST GRINSTEAD in the County of Sussex yeoman Doe make this my last Will & Testament in manner and forme following revokeing all other Wills First I give & bequeath my Soul into the hands of God that made me & to Jesus Christ my Saviour & Redeemer hopeing through his bitter death & passion to receive free pardon for all my Sins & as for my body to be buried in decent & Christian burial at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named I being in good health & memory praised be God for it doe write this with my owne hand

It[em] first I give to the Poor of the parish of WEST CHILTINGTON the sum[me] of Forty Shillings to be paid them within half a year after my decease by my Executor but not to those that take Weekely pay of the parish

It[em] I give to my loving wife as much of my household goods as she shall require & all the rent which shall be owing when I dye for that land called JORDANS so long as she shall live a Widow but if she should marry or dye then the goods to returne to my Executor hereafter named

It[em] I give to my son JOHN ye sum[me] of Fifty pound to be paid to him by my Executor within One year & a half after my decease

It[em] I give to my son THOMAS one Featherbed & all belonging to it & One pair of Fine sheets & Six pair of sheets more & all the goods which I have in my house called JORDANS & one part in Three of my Pewter but if my Son THOMAS should happen to dye that the copyhold land fall to JOHN then my Executor is not to pay JOHN the Fifty pound & if my son HENRY should dye that any Freehold land fall to JOHN then JOHN shall surrender all his right & title of HAGLAND to his Brother THOMAS or pay to him One Hundred pound upon demand

Item all the rest of my goods & chattells & money whatsoever I give to my son HENRY with all things whatsoever upon Condic[i]on he shall pay all my Debts & Legacies & funerall Expenses whatsoever whom I doe make my full & whole Executor of this my last Will & Testament whereto I sett my hand & Seal HENRY HARWOOD - the Thousand in the upper line & die in the Eleventh line was before I sealed it Signed Sealed & Declared to be my last Will in the p[re]sence of JOHN WOODWARD WILLIAM KILLICK his marke E WOODWARD

HENRY HARWOOD – The Testator

Henry was baptised in West Chiltington on 1 January 1639/40, son of John Harwood and Katherine [Burley]. He married twice, firstly at an unknown date to Mary Mercer/Mersher. She died in 1683/4 and Henry remarried in Stopham on 28 May 1685, to Rachel Hammond. Both were described as being of Wesr Chiltington. He was buried In West Grinstead on 13 January 1714/5 aged 75.

RACHEL HARWOOD – Wife of the Testator

Rachel was baptised in Billingshurst on 3 August 1654, daughter of Richard and Margery Hammond. She was buried in West Grinstead on 9 February 1718/9, and described as being of Chiltington.

HENRY HARWOOD – Son of the Testator

He was baptised in Wesr Chiltington on 24 May 1687. On 10 April 1715 he married Mary Jupp in West Grinstead. He was buried in Cowfold on 22 November 1735.

JOHN HARWOOD – Son of the Testator

John was the second son of Henry Harwood and Rachel Hammond. He was baptised in West Chiltington on 1 November 1688. On 22 June 1715 John Harwood of West Grinstead, obtained a licence for his marriage to Ann Sayres of West Chiltington. Ann was a daughter of Thomas Sayers and Susan Jupp. She had been baptised in West Chiltington on 14 May 1690. The couple were married in West Chiltington on 23 June 1715. John was buried in West Grinstead on 4 April 1754, described as being of Thakeham.

THOMAS HARWOOD – Son of the Testator

Thomas was baptised in West Chiltington on 11 January 1683/4. He married Jane Soal in West Grinstead on 10 April 1715. He was described as being of West Chiltington, and Jane was described as of West Grinstead. Was she the Jane Soale baptised in West Grinstead on 6 May 1691, daughter of John Soale and Elisabeth Gatland? They had one daughter, Elizabeth, baptised in West Chiltington on 19 March 1716/7. Jane died just over a year later in West Chiltington, and was buried in West Grinstead on 4 May 1718. Their daughter, Elizabeth did not survive her mother for long – she died in February 1719/20, and was buried in West Grinstead on 15 February 1719/20. Thomas died in 1730 – 1731. His death was reported at a Nutbourne Manor Court in 1731, but no burial record has been found to date.
