Peasmarsh

PEASMARSH is a parish and village 3 miles north-west from Rye, on the London road, in the Eastern division of the county, Goldspur hundred, rape of Hastings, Rye union and county court district, diocese of Chichester, archdeaconry of Lewes, and rural deanery of Icklesham. The church of Ss. Peter and Paul is in the Early English style, beautifully situated in the centre of a well wooded park, about a mile from the village ; it is a small and very ancient structure, and has been restored ; it consists of chancel, nave and aisles ; there is a stained east window and one to the late Dr. Buckland ; the chancel arch presents a fine specimen of the pure Saxon style. The register dates from the year 1569. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400, with residence, in the gift of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. William Richard Brodrick, B.D. formerly fellow of that college. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities are £11 yearly value. Near the church is “The Place,” the seat of Charles Liddell, esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Thomas Smith Pix, esq. J.P. and Charles Liddell, esq. The soil is loamy ; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are hops, and there is a good deal of grazing land. The area is 3,718 acres ; gross estimated rental, £6,622 19s. ; rateable value, £5,859 15s. ; the population in 1871 was 920.
