Catsfield

Catsfield is a parish 8 miles north-west from Hastings, and 2 ½ south-west from Battle, in the Eastern Division of the county, Ninfield hundred, Hastings rape and county court district, Battle union, rural deanery of Hastings, archdeaconry of Lewes, and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Lawrence is an ancient structure, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, tower and spire. Near the church is an old oak, in circumference about 47 feet. The register dates from the year 1611. The living is a rectory, yearly value £311, with glebe house, in the gift of the Earl of Ashburnham, and held by the Rev. Burrell Hayley, M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Fuller’s charity of £60 yearly is for six poor blind persons. Normanhurst, the residence of Thomas Brassey, esq. M., J. P. is in the style of architecture of the period of Francis I. and contains many valuable modern paintings, chiefly of the English school, some rare specimens of Italian tapestry, and a few important pieces of sculpture ; it is situated in the northern part of the parish, about 3 miles west of Battle. Catsfield Place is the seat of Lady Pilkington, who is lady of the manor ; this lady, the Earl of Ashburnham, the Duke of Cleveland, Thomas Papillion, esq. and Thomas Brassey, esq. are the largest landholders. The soil is loamy ; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are corn and hops. The area is 2,957 acres ; rateable value, £3,026 ; the population in 1871 was 707.
