Harrison's description (1911):

As an adjunct to the entry for Hailsham

Two miles west of Hailsham is Michelham Priory, founded for the Augustinians, or Black Canons, in 1229, by Gilbert III, de Aquila. The Perp. gateway is almost intact, and over the archway are two rooms. Below the gateway is a room, supposed to have been used as a prison. The present house consists of the refectory, on the N. wall of which are the handsome remains of a lavatory; a fine crypt belonging to the cellarers; buildings, and over it a room with a large hooded fireplace, probably the prior's chamber; and additions of Tudor date. The whole place has been recently restored, The old priory mill is still working.
