The church of St Nicholas is situated in the small downland village of Houghton, overlooking the river Arun.
This delightful church is a simple two-cell building, originally dated from the 13th Century, but largely rebuilt in 1857.
As there is no heating in the church, St Nicholas' is only used during the summer (from Easter to Harvest). Except for Christmas Day that is, when the hardiest of souls in the benefice wrap-up warm to join with the angels in celebrating the nativity of the Lord.
