The present church is an enlargement of the original Mission Room built to serve the west of the Heene parish between 1901 and 1913 and designed by the architects Cogswell & Hagger. This original mission room is now the south aisle of the church, the foundation stone was laid on 11th December 1936; the consecration was performed on 8th October 1937.
In 1951, St. John’s area became a Conventional District and St. John’s District acquired a thin slice from the parish of St. Andrew’s, West Tarring. In 1955, the Bishop agreed to St John’s becoming a parish in its own right. The Church Hall was built in 1961.
The spire was built in 1966 - nearly 30 years after the rest of the church was completed. From the church web site which also contains pictures of the original Mission Room.
