The parish church was originally built in 1905 on land donated by the Eighth Duke of Devonshire to serve the housing estates being built in the area.
A century later St Philip's has changed. The congregation decided that the old building was too large and too expensive to serve modern needs. Most of the site has been leased to James Butcher Housing Association to provide affordable housing for young families and single people.
The present building was erected in 2006, the architect was CPL.
